Good news, not-so-good news

I got good news yesterday - the pathology report from my thyroid surgery was benign. I'm relieved and grateful.

As for the repercussions of the hail storm, both the roofer and the insurance adjuster decided a new roof is in order. They decided on the final price for such is $9,600. Fifteen years ago, we paid $5,200 for a roof. Hard to believe it's gone up that much. The bigger, more unpleasant surprise, is the deductible. We have a $500 deductible on our homeowners - a privilege I can only presume we've been paying extra for all these years. Yeah, it doesn't count for hail and wind. For damage from those two, the deductible is $1,000. "Most people don't know that," the friendly adjuster says. You think? I am glad we decided to beef up our emergency fund and can handle it without a problem.

  1. Oh my, We had hail last week the size of quarters. Kind of unusual in Reno Nevada. Did some plant damage but thank goodness the car was under the car port and the roof stayed on.

I too have been trying to get our emergency fund larger. Feels like you get it up there and bamm....emergency. At least it's there.
Take care. Found your blog a few weeks ago and enjoy it.

    1. Exactly! We had just gotten it to $5,000 and it is already going to take a hit. But thank goodness we have it and don't have to consider going back to a credit card!

  2. Sorry to hear of the cost of the damage, but congrats to you for having the money set aside to cover it. That's awesome! Keep up the good work!

    1. Our minimum goal is $5,000 - which we achieved a few weeks before the hail storm, naturally. It will drop after the roof goes on, but I am so glad we decided to go higher than the $1,000 we have been holding on to for so long. Ideally, I would like to get it to $8,000, but that will take awhile.
